5 Mistakes Auditing Virtual Environments (That You Don’t Want to Make)Payment Card Industry (PCI) Qualified Security Assessors (QSA) increasingly are asked to verify whether a virtual environment is in compliance with the Data Security Standard (DSS) 2.0. Virtual systems, in other words, have to be assessed to determine their adequacy for protection of a cardholder data environment (CDE) – Ability to protect systems that store, process or transmit payment card data, especially sensitive authentication data. This paper provides guidance on how to avoid five of the most common errors when virtual environments are assessed for PCI DSS 2.0 compliance.

RFI for Virtualization Initiatives with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) 2.0 To help evaluate virtualization solutions for PCI DSS compliance, HyTrust recommends that your organization solicit vendor product and/or service-related input with a formal Request for Information. The RFI invites responses to questions for each Requirement of the PCI DSS with a focus on addressing security issues with virtualization. Innovative technologies from Cisco, VMware, and HyTrust are used to implement the cloud architecture with a number of additional security controls to meet the intent of PCI DSS. The reference architecture was implemented in the Savvis lab and the team collaborated with Coalfire, which provided guidance as a PCI Qualified Security Assessor (QSA).
